SENSORS, the national level technical symposium of the Instrumentation and Control Engineering department of NIT Trichy, started in 1997 with an aim for interactions between industry and academy to discuss latest trends in the field of Instrumentation and Control. The program provides opportunity for students from various colleges to attend to guest lectures and participate in workshops.

Inauguration ceremony started with welcome address by Mr. Ashish Katna, Chairman, Sensors 2019 followed by talk by Dr B Vasuki, HOD – ICE. Dr Vasuki explained about the purpose of this event. Prior to the inauguration of Sensors 2019, I visited the Siemens Centre of Excellence in Manufacturing at NIT Trichy and interacted with the faculties. This centre, which was set up at a cost of about 190 crores is intended to bridge the gap between industry requirements and technical education in universities. Understand that various courses are developed by Siemens and jointly certified by Siemens and NIT Trichy. Courses meant for students of engineering, polytechnic and ITI as well as for engineers from industry. This center also provides consultancy and R&D services to industries.

The CoE has following labs: Visit NITT website http://siemenscoe.nitt.edu/ for more details about this CoE.

  1. Faculties & Students showing major interest in ISA and likely to get request for further support in terms of mentoring for their projects, resource persons, hosting iACT, etc. (Raj to note)
  2. The CoE is an excellent facility to have hands-on training and projects. It seems, they have few assignments from industries and few colleges has shown interest to use the facilities. However, I think, this facility is not fully utilised. Recommend further discussions by ISAB (Jayesh Barve / Raj / Umashankar) with NITT, Siemens and their partner AMAR TECH, Bangalore (who provides course & faculties for hands on training at the center) to explore possibilities for conducting joint training programs & workshops by ISA Bangalore and NITT / Siemens at this CoE on revenue sharing basis. If an MoU can be signed between NITT and ISAB to conduct certified skill development programs utilising the facilities and trainers available at this CoE, it can be great value addition for members of ISA Bangalore (student members as well as professional members).
